This Week
This week we had a chance to really work on our philosophies and we did another walking classroom. I really enjoy working on my philosophy, because it is something that I will use in my future classroom. This is the style I would teach in, and I think it is really important to get that right. Also, in the walking classroom we learned about assessments. One key phrase that really stood out to me was "Learning stops when a grade is written on a paper." I think this is important to remember, because a student is going to be unwilling to learn if they get a bad grade on a test or quiz, because I know I did that as a student and it really made me not want to learn the material as much. That is why it is important to know that there is more ways to assess the class other than taking a test. Both the philosophy and assessments are important, because they both connect with the NCTCS.Outside Learning
I found a really cool article that talked about teaching in 21st century schools. This article was mostly about things that should not be done in the class. I really like this article, because it goes with what we learned about assessments. It says that standardized tests should not measure the quality of education. For example, this picture really shows what is not on standardized test that we are teaching our students. I really enjoyed reading this article, because I feel like it really related to our class discussions.

Bailey,
ReplyDeleteI am glad to see you are preparing your philosophy so you can actually apply the information later. This is a great perspective!
I love that picture that shows just a few things that are not measured on standardized tests! It really puts into perspective about what we are not seeing in our students when we just test them and nothing else. There is so much potential that our students will possess that we might not ever see if we analyze them just based on their test performance. Great blog this week!
